Pamela Anderson to part with prized sports car to raise money for PETA

LOS ANGELES - Pamela Anderson is selling her car to benefit an animal-rights charity.

The B.C.-born former "Baywatch" babe is selling her prized Dodge Viper and donating the proceeds to People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

"I've been working with PETA for 15 years," Anderson said. "They're kind of my ethical advisers. With them, I see actual results."

The 40-year-old actress recently held a private estate sale to benefit the animal organization and she's planning to personally oversee the sale of her 2000 Viper, which she customized herself with white racing stripes. The car plays a prominent role in Anderson's forthcoming E! series, "Pam: Girl on the Loose," but she admitted it was dangerous for her to own such a high-performance vehicle.

"I'm a terrible driver," she said. "It's just not a good idea for me to have a Viper."

The car will be among the offerings at Julien's Auctions' Summer Entertainment Sale of Hollywood memorabilia, to be held June 21 and 22 at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas. Other items available include Alfred Hitchcock's driver's licence, personal snapshots of Marilyn Monroe and Sammy Davis Jr. and an original "Ben Hur" script signed by Charlton Heston.

The sale will be broadcast live on Auction Network.

Prince Is 50 Years Old Today

The Purple One himself, Prince, is 50 years old today.

The pint-sized legend is one of the most influential, recognisable, loved and derided figures in contemporary music.

Born Prince Rogers Nelson in Minneapolis, Minnesota on June 7, 1958 (allegedly Prince came from his parents’ pet dog), it was in the 1980s that he came to redefine pop music.

Over the three decades of his career, the star has released a total of 31 studio albums and has always strove to push forward boundaries with his hyper-eclectic meld of funk, pop and R & B.

Despite a string of classic albums in the shape of ‘Purple Rain’, ‘Sign O’ The Times’ and ‘Diamonds And Pearls’, naturally he has dropped a few clangers in his time, perhaps most notably ‘Love Symbol.’

In 1993 he ditched his name in favour of an unpronounceable symbol, forcing people to refer to him as ‘The Artist Formerly Known As Prince’ or just TAFKAP. Of course, such a move caused many to deride him.

More recently, Prince has threatened legal action against YouTube and eBay because they "appear to choose not to filter out the unauthorized music and film content which is core to their business success."

Just last month Prince ordered YouTube to remove of video of himself covering Radiohead’s ‘Creep’ at Coachella Festival, despite Radiohead themselves wanting the video kept online.

Last year he ordered Prince fan sites to take down unauthorised photographs of himself, a move which caused many critics to slam the star.

But for all his negative traits, it’s his music and his influence on popular culture that shines through the most, with timeless songs like ‘Purple Rain’, ‘Raspberry Beret’, ‘Kiss’, ‘The Most Beautiful Girl In The World.’

In 2004 he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, while in 2007 he held a record 21-date sell-out residency at London’s O2 Arena.

In July 2007, he made the pioneering move of giving away his album ‘Planet Earth’ for free via the Mail of Sunday newspaper in the UK earning it over 1million sales overnight.

One thing's for sure - there's only one Prince.

A Southwestern alternative rock supergroup of sorts, Arizona's Friends of Dean Martinez features past and stage members of Giant Sand, Calexico, and Naked Prey. Giant Sand loss leader Howe Gelb, though non a member of the group, plays node keyboards on their debut album, The Shadow of Your Smile, a surprisingly retro set of guitar-based instrumentals divine by implemental and browse rock of the tardy '50s and early '60s. With slew of lounge music and desert nation guitar twang thrown in, it's sure enough retro in feel, simply non gospeller; with Bill Elm's keening blade guitar at the head and casual insertions of found sound and experimental bits, they conjure up candid stale landscapes with witticism and, one suspects, a bit of tongue-in-cheek irony. At whatever charge per unit, it's a brisk change from the frequently too-serious alternative rock paths that the musicians pursue in their full-time bands. Retrograde followed in 1997, and 2 days later the Friends returned with Atardecer. A Place in the Sun appeared in other 2000. The group switched to Narnack for 2003's On the Shore and the following year's Random Harvest, and likewise released Under the Waves on the German imprint Glitterhouse. Aero released the concert album Live at Club 2 in 2005.
